Around Chiang Mai

When we heard about Chiang Mai, Thailand, people always mentioned "temples" and "mountains". The first thing we did when we got into the city by overnight train was check out some temples. Chiang Mai has over 300 Buddhist temples! They really stand out from the other buildings in the city. Intricate, colorful, and adorned with gold. The temple grounds are always very well manicured and lovely, so it's a nice place to sit if you can find some shade. This is the first place we saw a temple gong, which was traditionally used to wake monks & call them to meals, but nowadays is said to bring blessing [or give tourists a cheesy photo op].

  12. I lived in Chiang Mai for a year and got a bit of a lump in my throat when I saw these pictures!
    I actually have that map framed above my fireplace in my dining room that you can see in your hotel room picture above the bed.
    I love Chiang Mai...sigh...
