Lake Louise and Lake Agnes | Banff

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

By far one of my favorite hikes ever. From Lake Louise (stunning lake) to Lake Agnes (stunning lake). Lake Agnes was still partially frozen and just as we arrived, it started to rain. Luckily, there was a log cabin tea house right there, serving a full menu of food! This tea house has been serving high tea to hikers since 1905. I can't imagine a better reward at the top of a hike—amazing view, a pot of tea, and warm apple crumble.

When we got back down to the bottom, the sun came out, just in time for our canoe out on Lake Louise. Look at how different the lake looks at the beginning and end of the post! When it was cloudy, the lake was a bright, milky turquoise, but when the sun came out, the color just wasn't the same. I'm glad we got to see it both ways.

Lake Agnes Teahouse Hike (source)

Time: 2.5-3 hours
Distance: 6.8 km (4.2 miles) round-trip
Level of Difficulty: Moderate
Elevation Gain: 385 m (1263 feet)
Starting Point: The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

As we made our way up the hike away from Lake Louise, the water looked even more electric!

Lake Agnes Teahouse—a marvelous site for weary hikers.
There's a waterfall just below the teahouse. They couldn't have picked a better location.

All the food on this menu had to be hiked in!

The illustration on some signage at Lake Agnes looks a lot like Yuriy!

There are so many places I want to visit in Alberta but the reason that I decided to research the trip was for yes, Lake Louise. 1. Vivienne, we went at the end of June. I'm sure it's covered in snow now so I'm not surprised it's closed this time of year. Hope you can catch it next summer!

  28. Julia and Yuyir...thank you! I've just returned from LL. We weren't able to do the Lakes Agnes hike (the shorter hike to Fairview Lookout was beyond special too) due to recent snowfall, so it was great to experience via your post and beautiful images.

  32. Grr just wrote a whole comment and it deleted. The idea was basically that I loved the photography and was very jealous of the idea of a six-month honeymoon! My husband and I went to Korea and Japan for three weeks and it was so sad to come home! I'm eager to see what's next for you two! :)

I'm from Calgary and that's one of my favourite hikes for the views, although it can be quite crowded in the summer. I can't believe lakes exist that are that beautiful.

  35. Beautiful pictures, we honeymooned at Banff over 35 years ago in the middle of winter so Lake Louise was a vast field of snow. The hotel there was closed that winter for renovation so decided to still go to Canada and stay at Banff instead. We did get to see Lake Louise on a day trip but I would like to go back in the summer when this hike would be possible.

  36. What a beautiful view, definitely a worthwhile hike. A very smart idea to have a tea house at the lake!
