Second Chance

Friday, January 21, 2011

While wandering about the city with our camera, no destination in mind, Yuriy and I almost walked past  a little place called "Second Chance Boutique". I believe Yuriy actually pointed it out, like a good husband should. Seeing vintage dresses in the windows, I was thrilled and shocked. I did not think people in Istanbul could possibly be into vintage style... that was just a fad from back home. Yuriy knew right away that we were going inside.

The shop was very small and stocked full of dresses in every color, classy purses, whimsical face masks, and vintage touches. Against one wall stood a pretty white fireplace with gorgeous headpieces on the mantle. I couldn't put a handle on myself as I madly started clicking away (after asking for permission). It had been so long since I'd been inside a vintage store, and everything around me was suddenly so photogenic and delicious.

Hope you can enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.

  1. First of all, you two are very welcome to Turkey :)

Actually, people of Istanbul are very into vintage style. Here are a few choices you might be interested in if you are still here for a few more days..

There is a vintage bazaar in Ferikoy, that you might be able to find very lovely antique stuff. It is pretty large, and have lots of options. But here's a hint, sellers may overprice things to tourists ;) But it's generally cheap and even if you don't buy anything, it's fun to look around. Here's the website.

    http://www.ferikoydebirpazar.com/

Unfortunately it doesn't have an English version, but you may find the adress on the main page clicking the pink shoe icon. The bazaar is in a place which is a little hard to find (even for the people who live in Istanbul). If you have any questions or need any translation for the website, please e-mail me to therja84@gmail.com

Also the bazaar is only on Sundays and until around 4-5 p.m.

The second option is Ece Sukan Vintage in Nisantasi. Ece Sukan is the fashion editor of Vogue Turkey and she also has her own vintage boutiqe. I haven't been there myself, but it's said to be veeery very pretty and the prices are also nice (Btw 20-150 TLs). The adress of the boutiqe is Ahmet Fetragi Sokak 152, Tesvikiye, and the phone number is (0212) 233 54 39

YOu can also find some antique stores and vintage boutiqes around "Cihangir". Cihangir is the name of the district around Beyoglu/Taksim. Even not for the stores and boutiques, you should go there just to have a cup of coffee of for a glass of tea if you like. There is a café named "Firuzaga Cay Bahcesi" whisch is a very cute place, also the streets and the buildings might be very good material for your photographing. Cihangir is personally my favourite place in Istanbul, and you will have the chance the see the modern and european face of Istanbul if you wish.

I really hope that you enjoyed your visit to Turkey. ;)

  22. I don't know if you'll believe me, but I didn't buy a thing! I have been tempted left and right since we first left home in September, but with one suitcase for 6 months, it's not possible to shop. I have developed a [somewhat] strong resistance to pretty things in stores.

Petit Bouton- WOW, thank you for all the tips on vintage shopping in Istanbul! I had no idea there were so many options. We left Istanbul, but maybe next time.

Anna- I thought the same exact thing... perfect wedding dress! It wasn't cheap though, otherwise I would have bought it, even with the limited suitcase space.

  23. Hi! I just found your post on this vintage shop. I am visiting Istanbul right now and I had the address for this store in Bebek, but when I went this morning someone told me they have moved to the Taksim area. Do you happen to have the address or sort of remember where it was? I would really appreciate your help!

  24. Anonymous - We don't really remember where it is (Istanbul is crazy big), but Yuriy says it was really close to the Galata Tower. Hope that helps!
